Rice and Snack Distribution at Camp Hope with Ken Yamamoto

Ken Yamamoto visited Camp Hope, our neighbor squatter camp, for the 3rd time and distributed 5 kg each out of 140 kg of rice to 28 families.
The residents of Camp Hope live on selling “taho” (a Filipino snack made of silken tofu).
As always, we were surrounded by many children. They were given biscuits and candies.

Helping The Needy

Gina, the head of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development (MSWD) in Alfonso, Cavite sought the assistance of the Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) for Loribel, a single mother of 2 young daughters for their basic needs residing in Luksuhin Ilaya, Alfonso.

On June 7, 2023 AWH along with Gina’s staff distributed rice, assorted canned goods, hygiene products, laundry products and noodles to the older daughter of Loribel who was left alone in their rented small house when we arrived. Loribel was at work at the Universal Rocks in Tagaytay. Loribel was with her youngest daughter there.

The youngest daughter of Loribel was raped by her father who is now in prison.

Gina’s staff called Loribel on her mobile phone and she thanked AWH for the assistance.

Helping The Injured

On April 27, 2023, the Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) assisted Joel Hermoso, a 40 years old electrician of Barangay Marahan 2, Alfonso, Cavite who was electrocuted by a live wire at the main road wire while holding a steel bar.

Former Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) Chairman Carol sought the assistance of AWH. Raymund (General Manager of AWH) visited him at the Tagaytay Medical Center and gave him financial assistance. Joel, his siblings and Carol truly appreciated it that would be spent for his medicines and supplements.

He will be relocated to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila that offers lower cost treatments to the majority of people in the Philippines who struggle with low income.

Supporting Youth in The Community

One of the AWH programs is providing quarterly assistance of P15,000 (P60,000 annually) to DSWD (Dept. of Social Welfare & Development) to support the Alfonso community. On Nov.17, 2021 DSWD Head of Alfonso, Cavite Gina Vedan invited AWH General Manager Raymund Balicha for the distribution of some of the items purchased with the quarterly support.

A computer set was provided to John Arnejo, a 21 year old third year student majoring in Hospitality Management at the De La Salle University, Dasmarinas, Cavite. In 2017 he was a minor who got in conflict with the law and was ordered by the Court to the custody of DSWD. He was recently ordered by the Court to go back and assist his mother. She is struggling with breast cancer and has not visited the doctor for quite a while due to financial constraints while struggling to take care of her six children after the father passed away last year. The computer will allow him to continue his schooling through online learning while still making some meager income for his family with nearby farming. He was very appreciative of the lifeline provided to him and his family.

After presenting the computer set to John, Gina and her team headed with Raymund to another DSWD facility for children who have been in conflict with the law located at the Alfonso police station. There she had purchased a double deck bed and bed foams for 4 male teenagers who had been ordered by the Court into DSWD custody. Again, the four boys were appreciative that they had a place to sleep. One of the double deck beds already there had been donated by AWH already directly some years ago.

The financial support to John Arnejo stopped in March 2022 since he decided not to attend college and instead work to support his mother and siblings.

On January 9, 2023, Casey and Raymund of Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) along with Gina of DSWD visited the residence of John Arnejo in Kaytitinga 1, Alfonso, Cavite to give 10 kilos of rice and cash to his mother suffering from breast cancer.

John was a former CICL (Children in Conflict with the Law) under the care of DSWD and his case was dismissed recently. He is the eldest among 5 siblings and decided to quit college to support his family by working as a farmer and construction worker as well, while currently working at the motorcycle repair shop, earning P200 to P600 a day.

The incumbent houseparent of CICL under DSWD, Romel, suggested John to apply for certificate as motor mechanic and get a chance to work abroad such as in Dubai. He will follow up with John for the progress.

Updates on February 20th, 2023

Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) has been assisting former Children In Conflict with the Law (CICL) 22-year-old John Arnejo with applying for working opportunity in abroad.  On February 20th, general manager Raymund took him to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Tagaytay branch to obtain his NBI clearance certificate, which is required to work abroad.

AWH also provided him financial assistance for food supplies for his family as he did not earn any income through his motorcycle mechanic job in the last 2 days. There were no clients who came to the repair shop.

The NBI office told him to pick up his NBI clearance on March 8, 2023.

John expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards AWH for helping him and his family.

Updates on March 15, 2023

On March 15, 2023, Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) assisted John at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Tagaytay, Cavite to follow up on his pending application for his NBI Multi-Purpose Clearance Certificate.

NBI requested for the Dismissal Notice from the court of his case when he was a juvenile, which he readily provided.

After reviewing all the documents he submitted, NBI released his Multi-Purpose Clearance Certificate with “No Criminal Record” remark.

John was very happy to finally secure his NBI Multi-Purpose Clearance Certificate that he thought he would never get due to the misdemeanor he committed in his earlier age.

He will look for a stable job and apply overseas when he gains more work experience in the future.

The day before the NBI errand, he made only 250 pesos at the motorcycle shop he works for the food and needs of his family.

AWH added to his meager income with assorted canned goods, noodles and biscuits bought at the grocery store after the NBI errand and transportation assistance for a total amount of P1,000. He said he did not have to worry about food on the table for his family that day.

In the morning the venue was in Taywanak Ibaba. In the afternoon, one event was held at Luksuhin Ibaba for the residents of Usting 1 and 2, Camp Hope (Barangay Sicat) and a small event was for 8 families in Barangay Palumlum. All of these places are in Alfonso, Cavite.

The main livelihood of the indigent camps (Usting 1, 2 and Camp Hope) are selling balot (incubated duck egg), taho (a sweet snack made with soft tofu, sweet syrup and tapioca balls). Many fathers of these indigent families selected for the events are construction workers.

Each indigent family received 2 bags of rice (10 kg/family). We prepared a total of 300 bags (1.5 tons) of rice, including allotments for CICL (Children In Conflict with The Law) and the staff.

AWH member Casey went to Divisoria, Metro Manila and bought 150 backpacks for students, 300 pairs of slippers for children and more than 1,300 toys in different varieties.

The total cost spent for the events was nearly P120,000.

AWH board member Lito Mondejar, Gina of the Municipality of Social Welfare and Development of Alfonso (MSWD). Anna of the Commission on Population (POPCOM), the Barangay captains, as well as several members of the Alfonso Women’s Council (AWC) joined the events. We invited 3 CICL in custody of MSWD to assist the events, so they would get involved in serving the community.

While we tried to make children happy, it was not our intention to encourage the families making more babies. Anna of POPCOM shared information on responsible parenthood and family planning to the mothers who have basically not had such education due to poverty.

The children were excited over their assorted toys and backpacks and sang Christmas songs.

Updates on December 25, 2022

Rice Provision to The Indigent Camp with Japanese Visitors

In November 2022, a renowned Japanese physical practitioner, Ken Yamamoto visited AWH with his follower sports doctor Iwai and performed voluntary treatments to the local Filipinos who had suffered with physical body pains and abnormalities in two consecutive days.

Many lined up for such an opportunity that costs nothing to them, but were limited to about 40 due to the time constraints.

Generally, everyone was really amazed how they removed the body pain.

After the treatments, we visited the nearby indigent camp and provided 100 kg of rice which to be divided to 5 kg to each family.

Christmas Giving Events

The Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH), working hands-in-hands with Rotary International Multinational Manila (RIMM), conducted Christmas giving events over a  two day span on December 28 and 29, 2021, for indigent families in 4 barangays (villages) in Alfonso, Cavite, having purchased vitally needed food supplies at a cost of P165,000.

In addition, two (2) large Balikbayan boxes filled with good quality used clothing donated by AWH ‘s Japanese guests before the pandemic were also distributed to Barangay Kaysuyo and Barangay Pajo to the most in need.

RIMM conducted  “Responsible Parenthood” events during the Christmas giving events as part of its family planning programs.

We herewith gratefully acknowledge the support of our funding member Dr. Miki Kanaji, who personally donated P60,000 for the events.

There were more than 332 indigent families registered in the master lists of the 4 barangays that attended the 2-days event. More than 637 bags of rice and assorted canned products (corned beef, pork meatloaf, beef meatloaf, sausage and tuna) were distributed to the indigent families.

Each family with more than 8 children received as much as 6 bags of rice. They said rice is an important food supply to have in the house even without the canned goods. Rice is the primary staple food in the Philippines.

In addition there were 4 minors under the “Children In Conflict with the Law” (CICL) program who also received sacks of rice and assorted canned goods. These minors are under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and with our assistance, are looking to better themselves.

Indigent communities in “Squatter camps” such as Usting 1, Usting 2, C-5 in Barangay Luksuhin Ibaba and Camp Hope in Barangay Sicat are supported by RIMM and AWH not only during the yearly Christmas giving activities but also year-round. The young children of the 4 camps again joyfully participated in several children Christmas party games hosted by Honorary RIMM Member Jun Baurile who distributed P20 bills along with stuffed toys donated by past president Betty Vicedo of RIMM. Their parents mainly sell “balot” (a steamed fertilized duck egg and “taho” (a classic sweet snack in the Philippines made with silken tofu, sago or tapioca pearls, and a simple brown sugar syrup) as their primary source of income. The families of these 4 camps migrated from the Samar province in the Visayas to look for better opportunities for their families.
